I admired this family for not going the expat route- and instead, working to live similarly to and with the locals in their area.I am somewhat of two minds about her teaching style. While Chinese education is focused on The Exam- rather like the current "No Child Left Behind" teaching here in the USA!- I am not sure that she was doing any favors to her students by trying to funnel them into a more (theoretically) American way of thinking, that is in many ways diametrically opposed to what leads to success in their culture. OK, I agree that thinking for oneself, and critically considering points of view, is a Good Thing! but then, I would, wouldn't I??? I'm American, after all!And Arrington was pretty unrealistic sometimes. For example, they moved to China for 2+ years because they had adopted a girl from China. Now, it did make all 3 of their kids bilingual, which is fabulous! however, Grace- the ethnically Chinese daughter- could not- as Arrington said- be understood "all over China"! And this was a ridiculous statement, since wrestling with the various Chinese dialect- mutually incomprehensible- was a large part of their experience there.It seems very odd to me that people will just accept that family- sometimes living in the same HOUSE, even!- cannot communicate with each other. At all...because of language differences, which COULD be overcome (especially with the kids), if anyone cared to bother. For such a family-oriented culture, this seems deeply weird to me.Anyway! It was pretty fascinating, and I do recommend it if you are curious about what it would really be like to live in China, and not as an expat.
